Help us demystify athletics for others – ask us a question using our contact form aand we'll do our best to get back to you
1. Please explain the different seasons in Athletics and what types of sports your club does during the year.
The Winter Season (April – September)
The winter season shifts our focus entirely off the track and layout spaces, pivoting into outdoor terrain and group distance building.
-
The Disciplines: We focus heavily on Cross Country, Road Racing, and Trail Running.
-
The Terrains: Training groups depart from our Rawhiti Domain clubrooms to run through the forest trails, sandy coastal paths, and local Christchurch parks.
-
The Events: Members compete in prestigious Athletics Canterbury winter events, including individual cross-country races, muddy farm-course challenges, and highly social team road relays (such as the iconic Governor’s Bay to Lyttelton Relay)
The Summer Season (October – March)
The summer season brings us back to home base to focus on speed, explosive power, and technical athletic development.
-
The Disciplines: This is our premier Track & Field season.
-
The Events We Do:
-
Track Events: Sprints (60m, 100m, 200m), hurdles, and middle-distance pacing (800m, 1500m).
-
Field Events: Shot put, discus, javelin, long jump, and high jump.
-
-
The Venues: Midweek coaching takes place right on our dedicated 400m grass track at Rawhiti Domain. On weekends, our competitive junior and senior athletes head to the world-class all-weather synthetic track at the Ngā Puna Wai Sports Hub to race against clubs from all over the region.
Our Year-Round Community Sport
-
Run New Brighton: No matter the season, our free community running group meets every single Wednesday at 6:00 PM, rain or shine. This bridges the gap between our competitive seasons, offering social joggers and fitness seekers a consistent, weekly fitness outlet.
2. Do you offer family discounts if I am registering multiple children?
While the national and regional athletic levies are fixed per person, New Brighton Olympic offers multi-child family adjustments on our base club fee to ensure athletics remains affordable for local families. If you are registering three or more family members at the same time through our GameDay checkout portal, the system will automatically calculate your multi-child bundle discount.
Volunteer Perk: If you join the committee of the club or become a club officer, your child/children are rligable for a 50% discount on their membership subscription.
3. What Health and Safety Policies/protocals does the club have in place.
How does the club ensure a safe physical environment at Rawhiti Domain?
Our coaching team performs a pre-training track safety sweep before every session to clear loose debris, sticks, or glass from the grass lanes and jumping pits. Because Rawhiti Domain is a large, public park, we maintain strict visual boundaries. Training configurations are kept grouped together within clear sightlines of the main clubrooms, and high-visibility cones are used to map out designated training zones.
What are your child supervision and safety policies?
New Brighton Olympic follows strict Athletics New Zealand child protection guidelines.
-
The "Two-Adult" Rule: No child is ever left alone with a single adult or coach. All junior groups are supervised by at least two designated adults.
-
Under-6 & Junior Attendance: For our Under-6 and younger junior grades, a parent or guardian must remain at the grounds for the duration of the session. If your child needs to use the bathroom clubrooms or gets distressed, you need to be on hand to assist them.
Are club coaches vetted?
Yes. To ensure the safety of our youngest members, all official club coaches, age-grade managers, and executive committee members undergo mandatory NZ Police Vetting checks. Our lead coaches are also trained in basic first aid, and a fully stocked first-aid station and defibrillator are permanently housed inside the main clubrooms.
What is your pick-up policy if a parent is running late?
We never leave a child waiting alone on the track or outside the building. If you are running late for pick-up, your child will wait safely inside the main lounge area alongside their age-grade coach or a committee member. We ask that parents come inside the clubrooms to collect their children rather than waiting in cars in the driveway, ensuring a secure, face-to-face handover.
How do you handle severe weather conditions or sudden cancellations?
Athlete safety is our priority during extreme heat or bitter winter downpours. If thunderstorms, high winds, or severe downpours make the outdoor track unsafe, we pull our training groups immediately inside the lounge and gym spaces. If a session must be cancelled entirely before starting, an alert is posted directly to our public New Brighton Olympic Facebook Group by 3:30 PM.
4.Clubrooms Hire & Venue Hire FAQs
Clubroom Hire & Venue Venue FAQs
1. Who can hire out the New Brighton Olympic clubrooms?
Our venue is available for hire to community groups, local sports clubs, corporate teams, and private individuals. Because our layout features a large lounge, dedicated kitchen, separate WCs, and an independent gym space, we can accommodate anything from business planning workshops and fitness classes to children's birthday parties. [1]
2. Do club members get a discount on hiring the space?
Yes. Fully financial club members who have been registered for at least 3 months receive an exclusive 25% discount on private lounge and kitchen hire rates. This is our way of thanking our community for their long-term backing.
3. Can personal trainers hire the gym space?
Yes, we actively lease out our independent gym room to local Christchurch fitness professionals during off-peak hours. The gym contains specialized machinery (including a leg press, multi-functional trainer, ski-erg, and rowing machine). In exchange for affordable commercial rates, our partner trainers offer exclusive discounted training rates for active NBOL club members.
5. Membership Times and Eligability FAQs
What are the different ways I can join the club?
We offer several registration tiers via our GameDay portal to match your goals:
-
Full Year Competitive: Best value for athletes (Juniors to Seniors) who want to train and race across both the winter cross-country and summer track seasons.
-
Seasonal Blocks (Winter/Summer): Ideal for athletes who only want to focus on one specific discipline (e.g., summer track only).
-
Social Membership (15+): Only $30 a year. Perfect for fitness seekers who want to join our running groups and use our gym facilities without entering formal weekend competitions.
-
Under-6 Little Athletics: A heavily subsidized, play-centric developmental tier for children aged 3 to 5.
Can I get a discount if I belong to another local sports club?
Yes. Because New Brighton Olympic is an active member of Eastern Community Sport and Recreation (ECSR), we offer a 20% discount on the NBOL Club portion of our fees to anyone holding a financial membership with an affiliate club (such as New Brighton Cricket or Rugby). Simply upload your primary club receipt on our registration page to activate the discount.
